Film Opening Question Plans

In what way does your film opening use, develop or challenge forms and conventions in real media products?

  • The sci-fi genre has recently become very space related. I decided to create a sic-fi film that was relative to the earth.
  • Sci-Fi films are typically high-budget and cgi heavy. My sic-fi film has a low-budget and mainly uses practical effects.
  • My film like many other films puts the protagonist in an extraordinary situation with the odds highly stacked against him.
  • Takes inspiration from films such as Donnie Darko where the protagonist is a teenager but has some slightly adult themes.
How does your film represent particular social groups?

  • The teenage character within the film is seen walking back from a party. He drinks and litters throughout the opening.
  • This goes with the stereotype of teen drinking
  • Cares less for his surroundings
  • Bad manners

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

  • A British studio
  • A studio that distributes low budget films
  • A studio familiar with the sci-fi genre
  • Studio such as StudioCanal or Working Title
Who would be the audience of your media product?

  • My audience like films such as Donnie Darko is set at 15
  • The film features some mature and darker themes that would not be received well by younger audiences
  • My film features adult themes such as guns and alcohol
  • The characters are designed to relate more to a teenage audience

How did you attract/address your audience?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

  • Adjust exposure of camera within different light to maintain a clear image
  • Save work constantly
  • Premiere pro is not ideal for editing large files of film
  • Use tint and adjustment layers to give the film a cinematic look
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

  • Do not throw countless cutaways and shots for simple tasks
  • Think about composure of the image
  • Think about how editing can reflect the mood of character and the tone of the scene
  • Close-Up should mainly be used in important moments and can reflect power of characters
  • Do not leave too much empty space in a shot

Importance of Genre

Genre is important is extremely important for production companies as it helps them establish an audience for a film. A romance film would likely contain a main focus on a relationship while a horror film would likely be set up to scare the audience. Genre is important to production companies as it helps them define their film and they also show what should be in a film of their chosen genre. Genre is important to audiences as it allows them to know the type of people who would watch it. Genre can also be mixed in some cases in an effort to appeal to a larger target audience, for example the film Shaun of the Dead was a mash-up of comedy, horror and romance and appealed to many people. Genre may also dictate the way in which a film is marketed. A horror film will be shown as mysterious with trailers designed to show some quick scares, while a comedy may be shown by involving comical jokes throughout trailers and within tag lines.

My Opening:

Genre is important to my opening as it allows me to know the limits of my chosen genre and know the types of themes that I should include. Because I am on a very low budget, I have tried to search for ways in which I can bend the sci-fi genre in order to fit my film's everyday characters and settings. I have also tried to use themes that will be able to appeal to a wide audience while still falling into my chosen genre.
