Film Opening Question Plans

In what way does your film opening use, develop or challenge forms and conventions in real media products?

  • The sci-fi genre has recently become very space related. I decided to create a sic-fi film that was relative to the earth.
  • Sci-Fi films are typically high-budget and cgi heavy. My sic-fi film has a low-budget and mainly uses practical effects.
  • My film like many other films puts the protagonist in an extraordinary situation with the odds highly stacked against him.
  • Takes inspiration from films such as Donnie Darko where the protagonist is a teenager but has some slightly adult themes.
How does your film represent particular social groups?

  • The teenage character within the film is seen walking back from a party. He drinks and litters throughout the opening.
  • This goes with the stereotype of teen drinking
  • Cares less for his surroundings
  • Bad manners

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

  • A British studio
  • A studio that distributes low budget films
  • A studio familiar with the sci-fi genre
  • Studio such as StudioCanal or Working Title
Who would be the audience of your media product?

  • My audience like films such as Donnie Darko is set at 15
  • The film features some mature and darker themes that would not be received well by younger audiences
  • My film features adult themes such as guns and alcohol
  • The characters are designed to relate more to a teenage audience

How did you attract/address your audience?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

  • Adjust exposure of camera within different light to maintain a clear image
  • Save work constantly
  • Premiere pro is not ideal for editing large files of film
  • Use tint and adjustment layers to give the film a cinematic look
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

  • Do not throw countless cutaways and shots for simple tasks
  • Think about composure of the image
  • Think about how editing can reflect the mood of character and the tone of the scene
  • Close-Up should mainly be used in important moments and can reflect power of characters
  • Do not leave too much empty space in a shot
